Davy Crockett was a native of what is now northeastern Tennessee born 17 August 1786 where he was best known as a hunter and for his unique style of backwoods oratory.
Only learning to read and write in his eighteenth year and marrying shortly afterwards and starting a family of several children.
He first became involved in politics as the local magistrate before becoming elected to State Legislature in 1821. In 1827 he was elected to Congress were he would serve 3 terms. Before being narrowly defeated in his election to a 4th term, he famously told the people of his district should they fail to elect him, “You may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas." Following his defeat, he did just that.
Crockett headed for Texas in the fall of 1835 were he was well received, writing back to his daughter in Tennessee on 9 January 1836,” I would rather be in my present situation than to be elected to a seat in Congress for life”
Less than one month later Crockett would die for Texas independence, giving his life along with 188 other defenders, in a former Roman Catholic mission known as The Alamo.
