With their accurate details and terrific sense of movement it's easy to see that these minis have been carefully researched and based on actual photographs of the combatants.
Captain Christmas on his Field Comm's Set standing next to his R.T.O. conveying the details of the situation is of particular note.
The M20 "Super Bazooka" Team is another excellent addition to the Marine armory. A relic of WWII and Korea its projectile a much more effective weapon than that of the newer and smaller LAW.

The other figures in the second release are simply outstanding. From the stalwart M60 Gunner surveying the battlefield to the M79 "Blooper" Gunner, charging for effective cover from which to unleash his 40mm Grenades, these miniatures will look stunning on the gaming table or in the display cabinet.
The first releases are specifically designed around the Battle of Hue and represent the US Marines heroic stand in the City.
The design remit from El Hefe was simple, "I want these to be the best 28mm Vietnam War figures available anywhere".
…The L.T. barks his orders as the LAW team rush to clear open ground, to support the Marine squad who are taking cover behind a broken wall, having
come under heavy enemy fire. The stress and fear written across the face of the

afforded by the blasted masonry of the wall…. These minis don’t just look good

Designed as a lightweight cross-country mover and driver in the 1950's to replace the famous Willys Jeep and the Dodge 3/4 ton truck the MULE became synonymous with the US Marine Corps especially when used as a weapon platform for the 105 mm Recoiless Rifle.

While the 105 mm Recoiless Rifle was designed for an anti tank role there proved to be few if any suitable targets for the weapon's anti tank rounds M334 HEAT (High Explosive Anti Tank) and the M346 HEP-T (High Explosive Plastic - Tracer). However for the conflict in Vietnam an anti personnel round (APERS known as the Beehive) was developed. This round contained 6000 steel flechettes to take out mass infantry and basically turned the 105 mm into the worlds largest shotgun!

El Hefe and the team are currently en route to Antwerp and the Crisis Wargame show with a van load of wargaming miniature goodness. The team will be setting up our stand where you can view and purchase from our huge range of miniatures and models.

Taking pride of place will be our new French Naval Boat kits. The range includes superb models for every pocket from the delightful Sampan, that can be used for just about any period, up to the stunning "Revolver" Gunboat which will dominate any wargame table or display.

The Revolver was shipped from France to take part in the Tonkin 1885 Campaign having already served with distinction during the Franco Prussian War; and is most suitable for any Franco Prussian wargamer wanting to enact river action on their gaming table. A large multimedia kit the "Revolver" is for the serious gamer and any model maker will enjoy its scale, detail and size.

My personal favourite is the Torpedo Boat complete with its resolute Captain atop the bridge. I can envisage gaming an 1885 version of Apocalypse Now with this one.

With the sort of epiphany that can only be found on the road to Damascus or in my case at the bottom of a triple glass of 18 year old single malt the password for the Blog has been remembered. So, after a long leave of absence, starting with today's post I am pleased to say that I will be updating the Blog on a slightly irregular, but more regular basis.

Since my last post (in 201....has it really that long??) here at Gringo 40's we have not only increased our established ranges of miniatures but added many new, unique and exciting periods not normally covered by the more mainstream manufactures. So whether you want to game an Aztec Demon of the Dark Warrior Knight against invading Conquistadors, or as Captain Danjou's forlorn hope of 65 French Foreign Legionaries fighting against more than 3000 Mexican infantry and cavalry we have it covered.

Our latest Tonkin 1885 range will transport you to the hot steaming jungles of French Indochina where stalwart Legionaries, French Naval Marines and Fusiliers take on the dastardly Black Flag Pirates.

My personal favourite are stunning Legionnaire miniatures that allow you to represent the indomitable Captain Danjou leading his men against an insurmountable enemy at the Battle of Camaron in April of 1863. Of the 65 only 3 survived, who when lead before General Milan is recorded as asking, "Is this all of them? Is this all of the men who are left?" Then, in amazement, exclaiming, "These are not men! They are demons!" Such is the stuff of legends and the French Foreign Legion.

Just over 150 years ago the call for volunteers to fight for the Pope against the army of King Victor Emanuel and his war for the unification (Risorgimento) of Italy was made in the chapels all across Ireland with over 1000 men answering the call.
Many were farm labourers, with little or no military experience, while a few had served in the British Army or were men of the Royal Irish Constabulary.

Travel to Italy was made difficult for these volunteers due to the Foreign Enlistment Act which forbade British subjects to enlist in foreign armies. Travelling my circuitous route using numerous excuses and reasons, such as pilgrimage and work, they made their way to the Holy See. The first to arrive were received personally by Pope Pious IX.

Lots of promises were made in the Masses in Ireland: that they would serve as a single Irish Brigade commanded by Irish officers and that that they would be well armed and equipped for their crusade. The reality proved very different with them being poorly equipped and armed and serving as smaller units attached to the volunteer units of France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria and Germany.

When war broke out in September 20th 1860 with the hostilities only lasting 18 days as the Papal Army was no match for the forces of the Risorgimento. The Irish did see action at the battles of Perugia, Spoleto, Castelfidardo and Ancona and were, as one would expect, well regarded as fighting men.

With defeat came capture and deportation back to Ireland were they were received at the docks of Queenstown, on the 3rd November 1860, as heroes as bands played and crowds cheered their arrival. The tailors of Cork made a thousand tweed suits that were given to the volunteers to replace their worn uniforms.

For some that was not the end of the story as they would cross the Atlantic to fight in the Irish Brigades of the Union Army during the War Between the States. Its most famous veteran was the dashing Myles Keogh who would fight and die alongside Colonel Custer at the Little Big Horn whilst in command of the I Company of the 7th Cavalry.

The upcoming release should please all those gamers who have been requesting that we ad Mexican Cavalry to our Maximilian range. We thought it would be a good idea to give you a taster of what is coming.

All the figures come with campaign laden horses have saddle rolls, saddle bags and lariats all cast separately giving them terrific detail and satisfying bulk. The irregular cavalry are mounted on smaller horses as per their historic counterparts and this helps add to the slightly rough and ready appearance of these units.

Regular Mexican Cavalry Trumpeter

The regular Cavalry all wear the standardized uniform of 1857; Steel grey trimmed in green with shako and pompom. Although sources do also give accounts of blue coated cavalry and greater or lesser amounts of trim.

Irregular Mexican Cavalry Lancer

The lance wielding irregular cavalry tended to dress more like rancheros rather than white shirted peons and their attire would depend more on personal wealth and looting ability. So plenty of flash with these chaps.

We will keep you posted as to when these and their compadres are available. So watch this space.

This month sees additions to our huge 28mm Garibaldi range and the beginnings of an exciting new Sci-Fi range of Robots and Androids again in 28mm.

The Garibaldi range sees Neapolitan Generals, both on foot and horseback, along with their aide de camps added. A lovely vignette centerpiece for your army can be created by using all of the new miniatures.
The Emperor Napoleon brought the Mamelukes back from Egypt following the campaign of the Orient (1798-1801) and made them a part of his Imperial Guard. Mamelukes fought alongside the Guard Chasseurs à Cheval, riding the same horses and receiving shabraques of a comparable design.

They never numbered more than 250 and by 1805 it was estimated that their complement was about half that number. With their ranks depleted the Mamelukes drew replacements from Frenchmen who were eager to serve in this exotically dressed unit.

At the Battle of Austerlitz, it was the Mamelukes counter-attack that defeated the Russian cavalry.

A Mameluke by the name of Roustam Raza served as the Emperor’s personal servant and bodyguard until 1814, having been presented to Napoleon in 1798 by the Sheikh of Cairo. Raza was assisted by the Frenchman Louis Etienne Saint Denis whom Napoleon made a Mameluke. The Emperor dressed Saint-Denis as such and called him Ali. While Roustam Raza refused to go Elba Saint-Denis followed the Emperor into exile on the island where he served as Napoleons second valet and librarian.

These exotic cavalrymen became so symbolic of Napoleon and the Empire that following Boneparte’s final fall many Mamelukes were murdered by French Royalists seeking revenge on those who had supported the Corsican usurper during his reign.

"Although not deployed in combat as a unit, the Engineers (Genie de la Garde Impériale) created in 1804 as the engineers of the Consular Guard, participated in combat more so than the combat units of the Guard which were usually held in reserve. By 1810 the Chief Engineer officer of the Guard had a company of Sapeurs de la Garde (140 sappers), all members of the Old Guard. In 1813 this was increased to two companies, and later one battalion of four companies totaling 400 sappers. The 1st and 2nd companies were classed as Old Guard, while the 3rd and 4th companies as the Young Guard." (reference Wikipedia)
They say that appearances can be deceptive. While the blog has been quite of late…some would say too quite…there has been much work on what really matters: Wargame Miniatures.

With Salute nearly upon us we thought we should let you know that we will be releasing more than sixty miniatures, you read that right 60+, brand new sculpts.

The first will be additions to our 28mm Meso-American range. Check out our cracking (or should I say quacking) Duck Warrior one of the new animist warriors who will be joined by other suitably adorned animal type warriors to take on those dastardly conquistadors or for a bit of inter-tribal bashing and slave/sacrifice taking.

We also have some stunning 28mm Napoleonic’s which at this moment in time must remain under wraps. But take it from us all you Napoleonic buffs are going to like these.

The latest 28mm wargame miniature from Gringo’s is the Riff leader Mulai Ahmed er Raisuni known simply as Raisuli to the English. He was the Sharif (descended from Mohammed) of the Jebela of Morocco and was considered by his people to be the rightful heir to the throne of Morocco.

Regarded by foreigners and the Moroccan government as a brigand, some Moroccans, especially among the mountain tribes, considered him a hero. Battling a weak and oppressive regime.
Described by David S Woolman as a Robin Hood figure combined with the qualities of a Feudal Baron and Bandit. A Saintly Villain who is still regarded as the last of the Barbary Pirates.

Born in 1871 Raisuli became involved in criminal activity stealing sheep and cattle before being arrested by the Pasha of Tangier, his own cousin and foster brother, brutalized and chained to a dungeon wall for four years. Only surviving the ordeal by the charity of his friends who would vast the prison to feed and clean him. Raisuli emerged from prison hardened and ruthless and was soon back to his old activities with renewed vigor.

Famed for taking hostages he could be both chivalrous and generous to those he had kidnapped. However should he consider the victim unworthy, especially those working for the Pasha, they would suffer death and extreme cruelty. His favored method of punishment was to burn the captive’s eyes out with red hot copper coins. On another occasion he beheaded the Pasha’s Emissary and sent his head back in a basket of melons.

With just a nod to Hollywood and Sean Connery Gringo40’s latest figure shows Raisuli in heroic pose, mounted upon a fine Arab horse, inspiring the Rif into action against the Spanish during the Moroccan Revolt of 1913.

Conquistadors (From the Spanish Conquistadores meaning Conquerors) were professional soldiers, explorers and adventurers who served the Spanish Empire of Castile.

While Spanish law prohibited non Spanish and non-Catholics from settling the New World many Conquistadors were in fact foreign nationals who to circumvent the Castilian law would Hispanicise their name and convert to Catholicism. Many famous conquistadores were in fact German, Dutch, Croatian, Austrian, Greek and Portuguese.
Administration tended to be left to Roman Catholic Priests who would also educate the men, many of whom were from extremely poor backgrounds, and were therefore illiterate when they joined the Military. The Roman Catholic Religious Orders associated with the Conquistadors and their pacification of the Americas were the Dominicans, Carmelites, Franciscans and the Jesuits.
Mesoamerican warfare was a bloody and cruel affair steeped in ritual as the Mayans considered it to have been sanctioned by the Gods themselves. To die in battle was to secure an eternity of bliss but to allow oneself to be captured was a most terrible fate.
The Mayan Warriors themselves would take part in blood letting rituals. Slitting own tongues and genitals and dripping the blood onto paper before burning it as an offering to their Gods.
