The Austrians provided the second largest contingent of foreign soldiers during the Maximillian Campaign; the largest being the French.
The Austrian Infantry component of the Austrian Legion consisted of three battalions of Jagers.
There uniform of blue grey jacket, red waistcoat and red trousers (probably French surplus), and black neckerchief topped of by a traditional Jager style hat of Grey felt with red red hatband and feathers was of a more practical design for the harsh heat of Mexico than the European uniform of the regular Austrian army.
The trousers were worn tucked into black leather gaiters. All Leather belts and straps were black and all ranks wore beards.
